Home to the crown of Western Kenya, Bungoma prides itself in the serenity of nature as gifted by its rich volcanic soils and the deep green landscapes that cover the earth. More to that, the abundance of Mt Elgon is not only experienced by the people of Bungoma but also by the people of Kenya. The crown of west Africa is the catchment area for the several rivers such as the Suam River which becomes the Turkwel downstream and drains into Lake Turkana, and the Nzoia River and the Lwakhakha River which flow into Lake Victoria.
Over the years the green lands have faced extensive threats of deforestation. Her forest cover has diminished across generations and until there is intentional effort to heal the land, mother nature will not withdraw her wrath.
As part of our peace building and environmental conservation initiative, Act! took part in a tree planting activity in Cheptais Kabeero Forest, Mt Elgon. Over 500 tree seedlings were planted within the forest and 100 more shared within the surrounding homesteads all this contributing to the national goal of achieving 10 per cent forest cover by 2022.
This was made possible through funding from the Royal Danish Embassy and our partnership with the Kenya Forest Service, Bungoma 4by4 Conservation, Friends of Mt Elgon among other partners as well as the Cheptais Kabeero Forest community.
