Royal Danish Embassy in Kenya Partners Visit – Coast Region

Our engagement with the Royal Danish Embassy takes place in a context of inequality and marginalisation driven conflicts in parts of Kenya where there is competition surrounding ethnicity, politics, and access to natural resources. It aims to decrease violent extremism, political and natural resource-based conflicts in Kenya.

This week we got to accompany them during the Coast region Partners visit where we participated in a peace dialogue meeting between government security officials and community stakeholders held at Mtomondoni Primary School to deliberate on the deteriorating security situation in Kilifi South, courtesy of our host Kenya Community Support Center (KECOSKE). In attendance was the Kilifi South Security and Intelligence Committee attended led by the DCC and the Royal Danish Embassy team .

More to that we got to visit the Early Warning Early Response (EWER) Centre at the KECOSCE offices. The EWER System is an effective local information sharing platform that helps in anticipation and identification of conflict concerns . The system has a dedicated alert number that through which communities send short text messages and make phone calls to report conflict concerns and potential security threats. The system is supported by a network of 30 peace monitors who also collect information for triangulation and verification. These monitors are linked to National Government officials and local peace structures to enhance response action. Approximately 500 reports have been shared since January 2020 that have resulted in proactive responses
