Grassroots Peacebuilding through inclusive community engagement

The Resilience Peace and Stability (RPS) Program, funded by Denmark in Embassy of Denmark in Kenya, continues to foster grassroots peacebuilding through inclusive community engagement. In Kalobeyei, Turkana West Sub-County, the RPS team led by Act! and the Danish Refugee Council met with the Women for Peace Group comprising both refugee and host community members from Village 1, 2 & 3 to understand how women are solving conflicts from within.
Women from Esikiriait, Ayanae Angidapala, and Elelea villages shared how they resolve family and intergroup disputes through community-based mechanisms. Their efforts, supported under the RPS Program, are restoring harmony in homes and neighborhoods, promoting peaceful coexistence between refugee and host populations. “Since 2016, there was tension between host and refugee communities, but when DRC came in through the RPS Program, they brought women together and now we live in peace,” shared Apak Lokawa, a host community member. The group has also launched a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) to uplift their economic well-being alongside peace work.
Despite their success, the women highlighted ongoing challenges: long distances to attend cases, limited visibility, and lack of financial support. The RPS Program recognizes these barriers and remains committed to strengthening the capacities of local peace actors, especially women, to lead from the frontlines.
